Shirui Lily (Lilium mackliniae) is a rare and endangered flowering plant symbolizing India’s rich natural heritage. Endemic to the Shirui Hills in Manipur, it grows at elevations of 1,730–2,590 meters. Belonging to the Liliaceae, it has pale bluish-pink petals that display multiple colors under magnification.
A shade-loving plant, it blooms during the monsoon, with peak flowering from mid-May to early June. It grows 1–3 feet tall and bears one to seven flowers. However, it is threatened by habitat disturbance, tourism, waste, and invasive species.
Conservation efforts, including protected areas, scientific propagation, and awareness programs like the Shirui Lily Festival, aim to preserve this species. The Shirui Lily highlights the importance of conserving biodiversity and protecting our natural heritage.
